Mask Network is a project that allows users to encrypt messages and do many other Web 3.0-style stuff on social media. It allows users to make posts on popular social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, that only their friends, or other chosen viewers – authorized through the Mask Network – can read. It’s basically an Enigma machine, but deployable on the oceans of the internet. Except, unlike Enigma, the code is ciphered and guaranteed by the blockchain, and is therefore uncrackable – although one must always fear the march of history.
The service started out as Maskbook, and focused exclusively on the aforementioned sites, before broadening its service and becoming a general encrypted messaging portal that exists on the Ethereum blockchain. A portal like this might not seem particularly innovative, but the crucial point is its ability to try and synthesize aggressively with the titans of the Web 2.0 economy. It’s founder, Suji Yan, believes that it’s too difficult to get users to switch from products like Twitter or Facebook, and that the best approach is to integrate with these platforms to restore users’ privacy – which, as we know, the platforms continuously seek to take away. As Mask Network is its own entity, these entities can’t (easily) prevent users from encrypting their personal messages.

To achieve this Mask has created a decentralized way of producing ‘dApplets’, or encrypted micro-tools, that can be integrated within the larger social media program (e.g Twitter), helping to mask user messages on that platform. With this Mask aims to bring more than the encrypted messaging services for users of the Web 3.0 economy and, via its wallet, act as a gateway to the larger crypto space. Beyond message and information encryption, Mask Network also developed features that help users to show the NFTs they own, and display their on-chain activities.
One particularly exciting feature Mask is enabling is gifting on Web3 is through the creation of Lucky Drops (previously “Red Packets”). Mask’s users can deposit cryptocurrency into ‘Lucky Drops’, so colored for their traditional symbolism in Chinese cash gift-giving, which can then be posted on public forums for intended recipients to collect.
It adds a neat gift-giving ethos for the social media generation and, as development and integration increase, has the potential to be a fun way for friends and family to leave daisy trails of love and warmth around the internet for their loved ones to find. Of course, MASK is still in relatively embryonic phases – like most of the crypto market – but there is serious potential here.
If you are using different types of Web3 platforms, one of the best ways to utilize Mask is by downloading the Mask extension. This will allow you to use the product on a variety of browsers, view different types of encrypted data, or interact with the red packets that you receive.
It is also incredibly useful when using certain social platforms, like Twitter, allowing you to view and interact with crypto asset ticker symbols, or NFTs, without having to click on any links. You can see them directly on that same web page!
The MASK token itself gives holders participation rights in the network’s DAO. It’s used for governance, access to premium features, and involvement in DApplet development. Each token represents a vote.
Mask has so far raised over $45 million from a combination of private and public funding and, growing on the excitement of it’s strong launch, the potential of MASK is clear to see. We are watching this one closely as preserving privacy, encrypting messages, giving gifts, and being your companion to the new, open internet on all the major social media sites, is a concept that we can definitely get behind.
